The productions team made its official debut in June 2006 in a hobbies convention in Ortigas, Pasig City; & it lived through a 2-day public appearance. But the actual movement of doing Tarot readings publicly on a grand scale started in April 2005, & the group was named a year later.
The brand is obviously a wordplay of the name of the renowned classic author Howard Philip Lovecraft, who now has a Tarot deck in his honor. While spearheader Ayumi (official reader, blogger, teacher) was thinking what would certainly suit her triad's major interest in the craft + subculture & have instant recall at the same time, she thought of her former pet tomcat (& quasi-familar, LOL) named Sophie, that was named by her departed younger sister, who probably thought the kitten would grow up to be a cuddly female feline. Thus, Sophie (S.P.) Lovecraft was born, since the team is predominantly female anyway, serving predominantly fellow females (younger & otherwise), & we all hope Sir H.P. wouldn't mind.
Sophie, as the name suggests, even before The Da Vinci Code hoopla, represents wisdom & education, & being a girl's name, at that, in modern times, can also represent the human anima (cf. animus; persona) in Jungian psychology.
So what is the anima like, exactly? To illustrate, "the male personality basically posseses drive, courage, endurance, & ambition. The male is a doer — a bold leader, changer, & shaper of the world. But without the anima's traits of love, compassion, intuition, & patience, the male attributes are prone to misdirection. Therefore, the key note is balance, & achieving it within ourselves can be a lifelong process. The anima is man’s feminine inner personality. Let us all embrace our inner selves & strive to have them in harmony with our outer world."
